Carp fishing can seem simple with the right hookbait. An effective hookbait stands out from ground bait and releases a good amount of attraction to entice the fish to your baited area.
Hookbaits have a higher seasoning content than standard boilies, so they are more appealing to fish. At British Baits, we stock a range of hookbaits from Urban Baits, the UK’s leading bait manufacturer that has been thoroughly field-tested in lakes around the UK and consistently produces results.

At Urban Bait we make our Air-ball pop-ups using a blend of fresh milk proteins. The milk proteins we use give the baits a nice texture and also send out food signals to the carp. The mix is completed by adding a buoyancy aid to create the pop-up effect. The baits are then rolled and […]

The main aim of using a wafter is to imitate the weight of a natural boilie on the bottom. The wafters we sell at Urban bait do just that. They are made with a blend of fresh ingredients, attractors and a buoyancy aid to take the weight of a large hook.

Hookbaits come in different configurations, colours, and sizes. The size best for medium size carp fishing is between 12mm and 18mm in diameter. Hookbait is usually made in ball or barrel form. There is no “best” hookbait; each fisherman has inclinations for the type to use depending on learned experiences and circumstances.
Anglers often use regular boilies as “free” bait to build carp’s confidence and then hookbait with the same flavour to catch the fish. Because they are used to and trust the flavour, the fish will take the hookbait.
However, you can use hookbait without boilies. Some anglers don’t think casting a solitary hookbait without free bait is worthwhile, as they don’t think the fish will find a single piece of bait in a large volume of water. But many fish are caught using a single hookbait, so it is just a case of trying both methods and seeing what works best for you.
To improve your chances with a hookbait, use a flavour that interests the fish’s sensory system. Fish have a powerful sense of smell, and the aroma of the bait affects your prospects, so pick an intensely flavoured hookbait. It doesn’t matter if it is fishy, sweet, or savoury, as long as it gives out plenty of attraction.
Fish are attracted by colours and are more likely to see and be curious by brightly coloured bait. Various colours will be more obvious fish at different times of the day. Therefore, it is best to try various colours and if you don’t see any movement, change them. Through trial and error, you will recognise which colours work best and when.
A curious fish will investigate hookbait, but often one investigation is enough for a catch. Unlike free bait, hookbait is not intended to be eaten in large quantities, so you can add a higher dose of attraction to hookbait. Using a glug on your bait will heighten the appeal of a single hookbait and put out an instant feed signal through the water.
Making your hookbait as appealing as possible will give you a significant advantage, but you also must get the bait as close as possible to the catch. Carp don’t move much when the water is cold, so cast in other directions if you see periods without any action. If a fish shows itself, don’t pause and cast immediately, you could be lucky enough to get a bite.
